The journey of an entrepreneur is rarely a straight line. It’s full of twists, turns, and unexpected detours. And let’s face it—if it were easy, everyone would do it. There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt along the way. These are not just inevitable; they’re essential. It’s in these tough moments that we’re shaped and defined.

As a leader, it’s your resilience and commitment to growth that will inspire your team to push beyond their limits and achieve greatness.

Over the past three decades, I’ve had my fair share of challenges. My journey in business, and even in the hospitality industry, didn’t start with an easy path paved with success. Like many of you, I’ve faced setbacks that tested my resolve, and moments where I questioned whether I was truly on the right track. But looking back now, I can honestly say that those moments, as difficult as they were at the time, were the ones that taught me the most—and ultimately led to my greatest growth.

Lessons from 30 Years in Hospitality

When I first started out, I was filled with excitement and a vision of where I wanted to go. I had no shortage of ambition. But like many new ventures, things didn’t always go according to plan. The hospitality industry is dynamic and, at times, unforgiving. I quickly learned that while passion is important, it’s only the beginning of the journey. Perseverance, grit, and adaptability are the qualities that get you through when the going gets tough.

Early in my career, I experienced setbacks that could have easily derailed me. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I was making the right decisions—whether that was in building relationships with clients, developing a team, or navigating the unexpected challenges that would crop up without warning. There were even moments where I had to ask myself, “Is this worth it?” But deep down, I knew that these moments were part of the journey, not signs to give up.

It was through these tough moments that I developed resilience. And that resilience didn’t just help me push through—it shaped the way I lead today.

Growth Through Adversity

The thing about adversity is that it has a way of bringing out your true potential. When you’re backed into a corner, you HAVE TO get creative. You HAVE TO find new solutions, dig deep, and most importantly, keep moving forward even when the odds feel stacked against you. And that’s exactly what I did.

One of the pivotal moments in my professional life came when I was faced with a job interview that didn’t go as planned. I had held so much hope for this potential opportunity, but I knew that taking on this role would have been incongruent with my personal values, and that’s one area I’ve never been willing to compromise on. So, I took a step back, said no to the job offer and yes to backing myself and starting my own business. This taught me one of the most valuable lessons in leadership—your setbacks don’t define you, but how you respond to them does.

That interview, though extremely challenging, opened new doors. It gave me insights that I didn’t have before, and it helped me fine-tune my future approach to leadership, team training, and client relationships. It was a turning point, not just in my professional life, but in my mindset. I began to see that every challenge was an opportunity to grow, evolve, and refine my vision.

Leading Through Resilience

As leaders, we often focus on the end goal—achieving success, hitting targets, and seeing results. But the real journey is in the process. The journey to success isn’t about reaching the top; it’s about how you handle the ups and downs along the way. And your team is watching. They’re observing how you respond to setbacks, how you adapt to change, and how you handle pressure.

Your resilience as a leader sets the tone for your team. When they see you weather the storms with grace and determination, they’re inspired to do the same. When they see you committed to growth, even when the path is uncertain, they’re motivated to push beyond their own limits and strive for greatness.

I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible teams throughout my career. And while every team has its own unique dynamic, one thing remains constant: your team looks to you for guidance and inspiration. If you lead with authenticity and resilience, they will follow suit. They’ll feel empowered to take on challenges, try new things, and step outside of their comfort zones—because they know they have a leader who believes in them and is committed to growing alongside them.

Reflecting on 30 Years

Looking back over the past 30 years, I can confidently say that every setback, every challenge, and every moment of doubt was worth it. Not because it led to an easy victory, but because it built the foundation for sustained success. My journey has taught me the value of resilience, the importance of adaptability, and the power of leading with integrity.

As leaders, we must remember that our journey is not a straight line; success is rarely immediate, and challenges are inevitable. But it’s how we face those challenges that defines us. It’s our commitment to growth—both for ourselves and our teams—that ensures we keep moving forward, even when the path is uncertain.

What’s Next?

As I look to the future, I’m excited by the possibilities. The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, and with that comes new challenges and new opportunities for growth. My commitment to my team, my clients, and to the industry remains as strong as ever. I’m continually learning, adapting, and striving to improve. Because at the end of the day, success isn’t a destination—it truly is a journey.
